A LITTLE HISTORY

The “Automaton Patent Gear” model was introduced in 1896.

The 24 inch Automaton Patent Gear machine was designated as a “Donkey or Pony Mower” the pony would pull the machine usually with an attendant at its head and a man would guide the mower from the handles. The pony would have worn large leather shoes to protect the lawn surface.

The Automaton was also available as a Chain Driven machine designated “Automaton Patent Chain”, each machine was made in sizes from 6 inch width to 24 inch width in 2 inch increments, with Horse Mowers of a similar but much heavier design available at 30 and 36 inch width.

The 24 inch machine we used as reference for our model was supplied to and used at a private estate near Bristol and dates from about 1900.
